Low Power FM Radio or The Community Radio Station

The union government has recently decided to grant community broadcasting licenses to recognised educational institutions / organisations recognized by the central government or the state governments. These will include the universities, institutes of technology /management and the residential schools. These institutions/ organisations can have their own low power FM campus radio stations. The power of the FM transmitter will be 50 watts or less. These radio stations will be able to provide high quality radio service in a radial area of about 5 to 8 kilometers.

The basic objective of community radio broadcasting would be to serve the cause of the community in the service area of the license by involving members of the community in the broadcast of their programmes. The programmes on the community radio services will focus on issues relating to education, health, environment, agriculture, Rural and community development. The contents of the programmes must be confined to Social, cultural and the format, subject, presentation and language must reflect the local Flavor and fragrance.
