Low Power FM Radio or The Community Radio
Station
The union government has recently decided to grant community
broadcasting licenses to recognised educational institutions
/ organisations recognized by the central government or the
state governments. These will include the universities, institutes
of technology /management and the residential schools. These
institutions/ organisations can have their own low power FM
campus radio stations. The power of the FM transmitter will
be 50 watts or less. These radio stations will be able to
provide high quality radio service in a radial area of about
5 to 8 kilometers.
The basic objective of community radio broadcasting would
be to serve the cause of the community in the service area
of the license by involving members of the community in the
broadcast of their programmes. The programmes on the community
radio services will focus on issues relating to education,
health, environment, agriculture, Rural and community development.
The contents of the programmes must be confined to Social,
cultural and the format, subject, presentation and language
must reflect the local Flavor and fragrance.
